AC 6: Lazy Soda Bread

Sun Jul 12, 2009, 10:22 PM
I'd never eaten soda bread before, but I understood it. It seemed simple. I knew the ideas behind soda bread. You take bread stuff and add baking soda and vinegar to make it bubbly. Totally workable idea right thurr. But I was being rebellious, or rebelliously lazy if you want to look at it that way. So I decided to just throw things in a bowl and see what happened.

You need:

Baking soda
Vinegar
Flour
Sugar
Salt
Milk
Water
A bowl

Take three decent-sized double handfuls of flour and throw them in a bowl. Now, for me, this equals three cups. Adjust your hands accordingly. Add a little sugar, maybe two or three spoons full, and a dash of salt. Whisk it all together with a fork. Add one and a half cups of water or so, a splash of vinegar, and a sprinkle of baking soda until it looks like a swamp! Now, attack the swamp! Mix it all up, then squeeze it and wring it and play with it until all the watery stuff's mixed in. Mold it into a cohesive ball, then dump it on a floured cooking sheet. Cut a big x or cross in it, then paint it with milk. This helps it brown and makes it look nicer. Bake it in the oven at 350º for 45 minutes to an hour; monitor it and make sure it's not burning. When you take it out, it should be nice and brown and crispy. Also, exceedingly heavy. But it's supposed to be heavy. Once you're done, wrap it up in a dry towel and let it cool. I don't know why you do the last part, but it looks nice.

Also. I /will/ be putting up the single most delicious and epic cake in existence next week. And most of the stuff can be gotten in the campus convenience store or out of vending machines.

This stuff is mighty cheap, too. Most of the recipes are; I try to stick to the spirit of the original Anarchist's Cookbook and use things that don't take much of that bourgeoisie pig-dog money.
